If your kitchen needs a complete overhaul, you’re probably considering a major kitchen remodel. Thanks to our experience helping other Northern Massachusetts, Southern Maine, and Seacoast New Hampshire homeowners live through kitchen renovations, we’ve learned a few strategies and tips that will make the remodeling process much easier.
What Is a Major Kitchen Remodel?
Major kitchen remodels involve replacing everything in your kitchen, including:
- Cabinets
- Sinks
- Countertops
- Lighting
- Flooring
- New appliances
You may decide to keep your cabinets and appliances in the same places or completely change the layout of your kitchen. If you’ll be redesigning your space, your major kitchen remodel may require tearing down walls, building new walls, replacing or relocating plumbing or electrical lines, or combining two rooms to create a brand-new enlarged space. Redesigning your kitchen or connecting two rooms requires creating seamless transitions between flooring, walls, and ceilings and adding new windows or doors.
If you don’t have enough space in your home for the spacious kitchen you want, adding some square footage to your home will solve the problem. Additions also require a few extra steps to join your existing kitchen with the new space and extend heating, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Is the food cold by the time you carry it outside to your patio or deck for a summer picnic? Do you want to bring more of the outside inside? During your kitchen remodel, why not add folding doors or windows that create an indoor/outdoor entertaining space or install large windows that make it easy to pass dishes outside? There’s no limit to the features you can include in a major kitchen remodel. Add an oversized island with seating for six, build the ultimate walk-in pantry, or incorporate a wine chiller or extra dishwasher.
Depending on the age and condition of your home, your renovators may need to replace:
- Sub-floors or structural wood damaged by dry rot, leaks, or termites
- Drafty windows or doors
- Leaky pipes and unsafe electrical wiring
- Ceiling tiles, drywall, and other products that contain asbestos
